WE ARE THE HOUSTON BOATMEN

Who We Are

ILA Local 1438, known as the Houston Boatmen, is a dedicated labor union representing maritime workers responsible for the critical task of mooring and unmooring vessels along the Houston Ship Channel. As a local chapter of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), Local 1438 plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient docking of ships in one of the nation's busiest ports.

Operating from their headquarters at 1705 Thomas Avenue in Pasadena, Texas, the Houston Boatmen are integral to the daily operations of the Port of Houston. Their responsibilities include handling mooring lines to secure vessels, a task that demands precision, strength, and coordination. This work is essential for the smooth transit of over 21,000 commercial vessels that navigate the 52-mile-long Houston Ship Channel annually.

The Houston Boatmen's expertise contributes significantly to the Port of Houston's status as a leading hub for maritime commerce. By ensuring vessels are securely moored, they help maintain the flow of goods that support both the local and national economies. Their commitment to safety and efficiency upholds the high standards expected in maritime operations.

As members of ILA Local 1438, the Houston Boatmen exemplify the professionalism and dedication required in the maritime industry.
